Videoconference of the European Union space ministers

on 30 May 2020

The President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), Dr. Phys. Marius-Ioan Piso, together with State Secretary for Research, Mr. Dragos Mihael Ciuparu, participated at the informal meeting of space ministers in the European Union. The event took place on 29 May 2020, in Brussels and online.

The videoconference was organised under the auspices of the Croatian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The event aimed at enabling an online platform for exchanging opinions on ways to measure the impact of space programmes. The evaluation of policies based on research will systematically target the efficiency of the content, the implementation and the impact of these policies. The purpose of the evaluation is to determine the contribution and value of these policies towards improving social and economic conditions of various interested parties.

The space sector brings opportunities for economic growth and supports European competitiveness and resilience. The technological solutions of space services boost the European data economy and enable the development of high-end technologies. Space supports the development of new products and services, which are compatible with a sustainable growth, such as smart transportation.

In order to guide the dialogue, the research ministers from the UE were invited to address two questions: how can public authorities make use of EU space data and services to facilitate ecological revamp after the COVD-19 crisis; How can space systems and infrastructure help advance faster towards sustainable development.
