ROSA President attends High-Level Segment of UN COPUOS

on 25 June 2018

The President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), Dr. Phys. Marius-Ioan Piso, presented Romania’s declaration at the High-Level Segment of the 61st session of the United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), held in Vienna, Austria.

In the declaration, Dr. Piso reminded the support Romania has offered along the years, for the celebration of UNISPACE+50, during the UNISPACE III Conference in 1999, but also while holding the Presidency of COPUOS and its Scientific and Technical Subcommittee.

Space research, technology and development are recognised in Romania as a major strategic area having a distinct role of driving force for other fields. This strategic commitment was proved by the positive evolution of the national space programme (STAR), but also by an important increase of the international cooperation, as Romania currently cooperates with all major space agencies and participates, in cooperation, to more than 20 space missions and programmes.

Mr. Piso reminded Romania’s involvement in the programme of the European Space Agency and the European Union and presented the national strategy build around the concept of 3S: Science and Technology, Services and Security.

Romania is actively supporting the Space2030 agenda on most of its objectives. Dr. Piso put a special emphasis on the critical infrastructure aspect of space assets and mentioned that Romania is one of the few countries with specific legislation for critical space infrastructures.

„We are able today to begin the transformation of this environment in a fantastic unlimited new world, and we were the generation having the chance, but also the responsibility, to be the pioneers of this new era”, declared Dr. Piso in the closing of his speech, referring to the latest scientific discoveries and technological advancements.

The High-Level Segment of the 61st session of the United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) took place on 20 and 21 June. It was a component of UNISPACE+50, which also included a symposium for the broad space community, organised on 18 and 19 June. The events are followed by the regular 61st COPUOS session, running from 22 until 29 June.

UNISPACE+50 was the first United Nations Global Space Summit of the 21st Century and it took place on 18-21 June, at the Vienna International Centre, in Austria. The event celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and aimed to shape UN’s comprehensive ‘Space 2030’ agenda.

On 19 June, before the High-Level Segment, the President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), Dr. Phys. Marius-Ioan Piso, participated at the Heads of Space Agencies Panel. During 22–29 June he will present statements as Head of the Romanian Delegation during the regular 61st session of COPUOS.
