The President of ROSA, awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa of the Politehnica University of Bucharest

The Politehnica University of Bucharest has awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa distinction to the President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), Dr. Phys. Marius-Ioan Piso. The ceremony took place on Friday, 13 September 2019. The honorary academic title was awarded to Mr. Piso at the initiative of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering.

According to the Laudatio that was read during the Doctor Honoris Causa ceremony, „Dr. Marius-Ioan Piso is the leading personality of Romanian space research, serving as the President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) since 1998. He is a Research Professor at the Institute of Space Science.

In 1994, he obtained a degree of Doctor in Physics from the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University in Iasi and in 1999 he graduated from the National Defence College in Bucharest. Since 1990 he worked for the establishment of the Romanian Space Agency and became its first executive director in 1995 and was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer in 2004.”

The Laudatio mentions that “Marius-Ioan Piso counted very much on the students and alumni of the Politehnica University of Bucharest. The University’s students were recipients of many mobility and financial grants awarded by the European Space Agency.”

Moreover, during the award ceremony, it was announced that the European Space Agency decided to open the first research incubator in south-eastern Europe at the Politehnica University of Bucharest, on the grounds of a very strong support from the Romanian Space Agency.

The speech held in honour of the ROSA President concluded with: “Taking into consideration all these exceptional contributions to the progress of space science, the managerial excellence at the Romanian Space Agency, as well as his remarkable vision in the field of astronautics, the Senate of the Politehnica University of Bucharest is honoured to award the distinction of Doctor Honoris Causa to Mr. Marius-Ioan Piso”.
