Romania participates at UNISPACE+50, the 50th anniversary of the first United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space

on 20 June 2018

UNISPACE+50 is the first United Nations Global Space Summit of the 21st Century and it takes place on 18-21 June, at the Vienna International Centre, in Austria. The event celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and aims to shape UN’s comprehensive ‘Space 2030’ agenda. Romania is represented by the President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), Dr. Phys. Marius-Ioan Piso, and the Romanian delegation he is leading.

UNISPACE+50 is a milestone opportunity to further demonstrate the broad societal benefits of space as an area of innovation, inspiration, interconnectedness, integration and investment, and to strengthen unified efforts at all levels and among all relevant stakeholders of the space sector in addressing the overarching long-term development concerns of society with concrete deliverables pertaining to space for development.

UNISPACE+50 has two main parts: a symposium for the broad space community, organised on 18 and 19 June; and a special high-level segment of the 61st session of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), which takes place on 20 and 21 June. These events will be followed by the regular 61st COPUOS session, running from 22 until 29 June.

On 19 June, the President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), Dr. Phys. Marius-Ioan Piso, participated at the Heads of Space Agencies Panel, organised as part of the symposium. During 20–29 June he will present statements as Head of the Romanian Delegation both during the special high-level segment of the 61st session of COPUOS, as well as during regular sessions.

In parallel, the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) participates at the UNISPACE+50 exhibition, which brings togetheraround 40 exhibitors. The exhibition is organised in the Rotunda of the Vienna International Centre from 18–23 June. It will be open to the public on Saturday, 23 June.

Romania is a member of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs — UNOOSA beginning with the year 1959, when the General Assembly also established the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
