ESTEC Delegation to Romania

on 19 April 2018

Between 4–5 April 2018, an official delegation from ESA’s European Space Technology and Research Centre (ESTEC) came to Bucharest to explore possibilities to expand the involvement of Romanian organisations in the activities of ESA-ESTEC.

The Delegation was led by the ESA-ESTEC Director, Mr. Franco Ongaro, who was accompanied by five experts: Mr. Torben Henriksen, Head of the Mechanical Department, Mr. Gaetan Piret, Head of ESTEC Testing Division, Mr. Frederic Teston, Head of Systems Department, Mr. Matthew Bullock, Chief of the Technology Implementation Section, and Mr. Zoran Sodnik, laser systems expert.

The European Centre for Space Research and Technology is the technical heart of the European Space Agency (ESA) — where most of the ESA projects are born and developed through various stages. 50 years ago, on 3 April 1968, ESTEC was inaugurated in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. During its 50 years of activity, ESTEC has grown into ESA’s largest establishment and the technical and the organisational center of Europe's space sector.

The Centre supports the European space industry and works with organisations such as research institutes, universities and national agencies from ESA Member States. Romania is the 19th ESA Member State and Romanian participation at ESA is coordinated by the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA).

The delegation was welcomed by the ROSA President, Dr. Phys. Marius-Ioan Piso, together with Romania’s representatives in ESA Committees, the executive team for the Research, Development and Innovation Programme STAR, Space Technology and Advance Research, as well as representatives from the scientific community.
